Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a percentage?

Divide the part by the whole, then multiply by 100. For example, 45 out of 180 is (45 ÷ 180) × 100 = 25%. To find X% of a number instead, multiply: 20% of 500 is (20 ÷ 100) × 500 = 100.

How do I calculate a discount?

Multiply the original price by the discount as a decimal to get the amount saved, then subtract. A $200 item at 15% off: $200 × 0.15 = $30 saved, so you pay $170. Our discount calculator does this instantly, with any currency symbol.

How do I calculate percentage increase?

Subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original value, and multiply by 100. A price rising from $200 to $250: (250 − 200) ÷ 200 × 100 = 25% increase.

How do I find the original price after a discount?

Divide the final price by (1 − discount rate as a decimal). An $80 item after a 20% discount was originally $80 ÷ (1 − 0.20) = $80 ÷ 0.80 = $100. Use the Reverse Percentage tab above and it is done for you.
